The Active Brittany Spaniel Mix

Dog lovers all around the world seek to find dogs that are perfect for their lifestyles and their family. For the owners who are looking for a hunting, pointing, or setter dog the Brittany is among one of their favorites. The Brittany is a dog that was bred for hunting and is classically a gun dog. It is often referred to as a Spaniel. The Brittany Spaniel mix was first developed in the Brittany Province of France in the mid 1800′s, hence their name. This breed was originally bred as a hunting dog and noted for being easy to train, sensitive, and sweet dog. The Brittany Spaniel makes an excellent working dog in the field, as well as a great companion around the home.

The Brittany Spaniel Mix is a very athletic and solidly built dog. Most of them have very long legs and are able to run very quickly. Brittanies generally range in a height between 17 to 20.5 inches at the withers, with females at the lower end and males taller. The average weight for a healthy Brittany is between 36 and 43 lbs, depending upon their height. Some Brittanies are born with naturally short tails and others with longer tails. It is very common for owners to have longer tails docked to a length of 1-4 inches.

The coat of the Brittany Spaniel Mix comes in a variety of colors. An orange and white coat is most common in the American Brittany, but other colors include liver and white, or orange roan and liver roan. All of these colors are acceptable in the show ring. There is also tri-colored coat, which is acceptable in most countries except the United States. Since the tri-color coat includes black, it is a disqualification in US conformation events. However, this color combination is extremely common in the UK, and in France, the home country.

In order to make an all around excellent family pet and working dog, the Brittany Spaniel Mix needs a lot of exercise and training. They are very active dogs and if not physically and mentally exercised on a daily basis they can become destructive, shy, and even uncontrollable. Having a fenced in yard is a must with this breed. They need lots of room to run and exercise. Brittanies can also become very shy if not thoroughly socialized, and even among well-socialized dogs there is significant variation in levels of friendliness. Some are friendlier than others and that can vary due to their breeding lines.
